What makes them UPcycled?

Our perfectly imperfect UPcycled Candles are one of our most recent products from our experimental Artisan Studio.

These lovely candles are made using a blend of salvaged vintage candle sticks, organic beeswax, organic coconut oil, and high quality essential + fragrance oils.

All of the candles feature a hand rolled or braided, organic hemp wick coated in beeswax.

Each candle is hand poured with care into UPcycled + locally sourced glass vessels.

We use no adhesives to secure the wicks to the vessels, as this reduces the potential presence of toxic chemicals while making DIY UPcycling projects from spent vessels.

Because we are still in the experimental phase, we have not been able to solidify a burn time for our candles. However, as long as proper 'Candle Etiquette' is used, they should last for at least 20 hours of burning.

Candle Ingredients…

  • Organic Beeswax sourced from Honey Next Door

  • Salvaged Vintage Candle Sticks (via Cali Rose Interiors) - used as colorants

  • Salvaged Candle wax from donated spent candles - used as scent boosting + colorants

  • Organic Unrefined Coconut Oil

  • Intentionally sourced Essential Oils and/or Fragrance Oils

  • Hand-rolled, Organic, Beeswax coated Hemp wick + metal wick fasteners OR wooden wicks

(No adhesives are used to stick the wicks to the bottom of the vessels. This allows the wick to become dislodged when the wax melt gets too low, making vessel reuse quick + easy)

What's the buzz on beeswax? 🐝

Beeswax is sourced from honey bees.

It is a collection of discarded waxy secretions from worker bees used by the hive workers to build their combs. These combs are then used to host their young, and the honey that feeds their young.

We choose to work with beeswax because it is a cruelty-free, renewable byproduct of the beekeeping industry, not to mention it has many beneficial properties and uses. (ex: waterproofing, wood + leather polishing, cosmetics etc.)

When burned, beeswax releases negative ions into the air that bind to floating particulate matter, causing said particles to drop out of the air. Legend has it that negative ions stimulate the pituitary gland which increases creativity, intuition, and dream activity.

Beeswax candles make great gifts for people with sinus, allergy, and asthma conditions due to their air purifying properties + absence of chemical processing ( no hardeners, additives, or chemical treatments).

FUN FACT: Beeswax candles are known to emit light similar to the spectrum of sunlight. It has a high melting point (149F), which means it has a slower burn rate than most candles, and emits the brightest + most warm-toned flame.

'Candle Etiquette' and the Candle Commandments

As we all know, an open flame is something to take very seriously. We want to make sure you and your loved ones are remaining as safe as possible.

Read through this list of tips before your hot date with one of our UPcycled candles...

  1. Before Burning the candle, trim the wick to at least 1/4 inch. Doing this prevents uneven burning, flaring, or dripping.

  2. Burn for 2-3 hours each time you burn the candle. Ideally, you want to allow the candle to create a full melt pool before putting it out to prevent tunneling.

  3. Avoid placing your candle under vents, drafts, and air currents. This will prevent rapid + uneven burning, soot production, and excessing dripping.

  4. Trim wick to 1/4 inch before every burn. ✨

  5. Never leave a lit candle unattended, or lit while sleeping. You should put out all burning candles when leaving a room.

  6. Never touch or move a candle that has liquified wax or is actively burning, you could burn yourself.

  7. If the flame becomes too active + tall, extinguish the candle, trim the wick, and let the wax cool before relighting. (Tip: check for drafts- this could have caused the wild flame)

  8. Never burn a candle on or near anything flammable (i.e. bedding, furniture + decorations, curtains, clothing, books + paper)

  9. Stop using the candle when there is 1/4 in. of wax remaining.

  10. Keep candles away from pets and children. Do not place them somewhere they can be knocked over.

  11. If you can, snuff out the candle instead of blowing to prevent wax splatter.

  12. When snuffing the candle, make sure it goes out completely before you leave the room. Do not pick up or move candle until it's room temperature.

What to do with a used candle vessel...

Once you have burned your candle down to the last 1/4 inch of wax, you can UPcycle the glassware to be used as storage, a plant propagation vessel, or maybe give candle making a shot!
